Sessions Set for December 2, 9 and 16:
OU Announces Free Employment Workshops for Job Seekers

Responding to extremely high unemployment rates which have hit the Jewish community particularly hard, the Orthodox Union Department of Synagogue Services, in conjunction with the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services (JBFCS) and Federation Employment and Guidance Services (FEGS), both beneficiaries of UJA-Federation of New York, is addressing the needs of those looking for work with three free two-hour workshops at OU headquarters.

“The Jewish community suffers from a new kind of unemployment,” declared OU Executive Vice President Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb. “In the past, it was those who had no training who went without jobs. Today, it is the highly trained who are unemployed. These workshops were designed to deal with that situation by providing the skills that applicants need to succeed in a highly competitive market.”

The workshops are part of the OU emphasis on strengthening the Jewish family. “Unemployment can shatter a family,” said Rabbi Moshe D. Krupka, OU Executive Director of Programs. “We are working together with two agencies, FEGS and JBFCS, which have years of experience dealing with the job market and coping with the effects of unemployment on families. Working with our partners will help us to address the crisis of the unemployed and to reach the people who need our help the most.”

Workshops will be held Tuesdays, December 2, 9 and 16 from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Orthodox Union, 11 Broadway, 14th floor.

Topics are as follows:

December 2
- The Complete Job Search will focus on how to write a winning resume and an attention grabbing cover letter; how to impress your interviewer; and where to find available job resources that you may not know about;

December 9
- The Power of Positive Thinking will explore the feelings and emotions of the job seeker, emphasizing ways to find greater fulfillment and aspects for success, while balancing personal and family life during the job search;

December 16
- Winning Interview Techniques, an advanced session, will focus on fine-tuning your interview skills; discuss how to answer typical and not so typical interview questions succinctly and with relevance; other topics include maintaining eye contact and voice modulation and developing interview strategies.

Registration is required by the Monday before each session. Applicants should call 212-613-8300 to register.

The workshops are one aspect of the OU’s response to the unemployment situation. OU’s online Job Bank at www.ou.org features a wide variety of listings catering to a broad array of job seekers. Categories range from health care to computers and technology; from accounting and bookkeeping to Jewish education and rabbinics. The Job Bank is updated frequently with new listings that come in from a variety of sources.
