OU Appoints Rabbi Weinreb As Top Professional
Rabbi Weinreb Says Community Dialogue, Adding Value and Growth, Top Agenda

The Orthodox Union (OU) has appointed Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb of Baltimore, MD, as the organization’s new Executive Vice President. The choice, which was the result of a nationwide search, was confirmed last night by the organization’s Executive Board at a meeting in New York.

A widely respected scholar and orator, Rabbi Weinreb is also a psychotherapist who has campaigned to place social issues, such as domestic violence, on the agenda of the Orthodox world. As spiritual leader of Congregation Shomrei Emunah in Baltimore, which grew from 160 families to more than 400 under his guidance and leadership during the past 12 years, he has also been extensively involved with the local Federation and with the larger community in general.

“I am indeed honored to have been selected to lead the Orthodox Union at such an significant juncture,” said Rabbi Weinreb.  “The OU plays a vital role in the lives of American Jews and I hope to help expand and enhance its programming and services, particularly in the difficult emotional and economic climate that we now face.”  Rabbi Weinreb will begin working on a full time basis in January 2002, but will begin creating his blueprint for the future in the interim.

Rabbi Weinreb received his semicha (rabbinic ordination) from the Rabbi Jacob Joseph Yeshiva in New York, was graduated from the New School for Social Research with a Masters in psychology and received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Maryland.  Before taking on his duties as a pulpit rabbi, he served as Assistant Supervisor of Psychological Services for the Prince George’s County Public Schools, Chief Psychologist of the Potomac Foundation for Mental Health and maintained a private practice of psychotherapy.

Rabbi Weinreb is the rabbinic liaison for NEFESH: North American Network of Orthodox Mental Health Professionals. He is a past vice president of the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA), has served on the Rabbinic Cabinet of United Jewish Communities and was formerly a member of the Ethics Committee of the Veterans Administration Hospitals.

Locally, Rabbi Weinreb is vice president of the Rabbinical Council of Greater Baltimore, a member of the board of directors of the Associated Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, the Jewish National Fund, and the executive committee of the Baltimore Bet Din where he serves as a Dayan (rabbinical judge).

OU President Harvey Blitz commented, “As an organization, we are very excited to be appointing someone like Rabbi Weinreb, a man coming to us with such an impressive range of talents and experiences, as our top professional.  I eagerly look forward to working with him and seeing his visions take root as the organization moves to new heights.”

Rabbi Weinreb and his wife, Chavi have three children and 10 grandchildren.
