Former Syracuse Resident Honored
For Decades of Youth Work
Rena and David Hurwitz of Queens, N.Y., were honored at the Orthodox Unions
(OU) National Conference of Synagogue Youth (NCSY) Ben Zakkai Honor Society Dinner in New
York City. David, who grew up in Syracuse, was an active member of Har Sinai, NCSYs
Upstate New York region for many years. The Hurwitzs received the Ezra Ben-Zion
Lightman Memorial Award in recognition of their devotion to Jewish youth and NCSY.
During the dinner, the Hurwitzs were shown a surprise video featuring Rabbi Louis
Ginsburg, the former rabbi of the Orthodox shul in Utica, NY for four decades and former
director of the NCSY Upstate NY region. Rabbi Ginsburg, who is singularly responsible for
building Jewish life in Utica, had a strong influence on David. On the video, Rabbi
Ginsburg, who made aliyah a few years ago, recalled Davids "deep and
abiding love for Torah" and "dedication to Jewish causes."
"Through their deep commitment to the ideals of NCSY, the Hurwitzs are
building future generations of Jews," said Mandell I. Ganchrow, M.D., President of
the OU. "For decades, the Hurwitzs have served as pillars of the New York
Region of NCSY. As a member of the Unions Youth Commission, David has consistently
and selflessly given of his time, his effort and of himself to bring Jewish youth back to
Judaism," Dr. Ganchrow added.
In addition to maintaining a busy pediatric practice in Queens, David is a well-known
and respected lecturer on Jewish medical ethics. Rena, an early childhood educator, is the
Director of the Shalhevet Torah Institute for Women in Queens.
NCSY is one of the most effective vehicles
for Jewish outreach and education worldwide. Found in 39 states, 3 Canadian provinces and
215 communities across the continent, NCSY annually reaches 40,000 high school-aged boys
and girls in North America, Israel and Europe with 600 major educational and social
events.
