Dear Stavsky Family,
It is with a great sadness that I write this letter of condolence to you
on behalf of the entire Orthodox Union. The name of Rabbi David Stavsky,
z’l is a name which is already inscribed in the annals of the history of
the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America and especially in
the history of its National Conference of Synagogue Youth. Rabbi Stavsky
was indeed a legend within these movements. He was revered because of his
wisdom, activism, prophetic foresight, and urbane and welcoming
personality. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, and he will be
especially missed within our ranks.
I personally recall fondly the many opportunities I had to speak with
Rabbi Stavsky on matters of communal importance and on matters of Torah
scholarship. I felt privileged when he gave me, about a year ago, a copy
of his latest book which I treasure and refer to from time to time, always
being careful to quote from his original and extremely germane ideas. I
recall with gratitude the evening I spent in your home, with the Rabbi z’l
and the Rebettzin, may she live long and healthy years full of nachas from
her wonderful family. Not only did I enjoy the benefit of their gracious
hospitality but I felt privileged to be in the company of people who were
indeed “servants of the Lord” and who could look back with pride upon so
many decades of admirable accomplishments.
As I travel in my capacity as Executive Vice President of the Orthodox
Union from community to community I see all the more the importance of
strong rabbinic leadership, and sadly the dearth thereof nowadays. Rabbi
Stavsky has left behind the image of a model leader for all of us to
strive to emulate.
May the Ribbono Shel Olam bring you comfort and condolences along with the
other mourners of Zion, and along with all those who mourn along with you
the loss of this truly great individual.
Very Truly Yours,
Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb
