RONALD REAGAN

Presidents of the United States are routinely called "leaders of the free world," but in the case of Ronald Reagan, this was no mere expression. For his entire two terms in office, Reagan contrasted the freedom of America with the oppression of the Soviet Union, the "evil empire," and by doing so, helped to destroy that empire.

In the process, his actions led to freedom for Soviet Jews.

His ability to communicate about our American democracy served as a beacon to oppressed people around the world, just as his sunny and optimistic disposition provided a much-needed lift for those of us at home. Leadership has many aspects, and the form practiced by President Reagan was just what the world needed. Truly, he helped change that world, and much for the better.

The Officers, membership and staff of the Orthodox Union join with millions of Americans and millions more around the world in mourning his passing.
