The Orthodox Union Story

OU.ORG is proud to be able to present The Orthodox Union: A Centenary Portrayal to its online kehilla (community), as a significant contribution to Jewish historical scholarship and a fitting commemoration of the Orthodox Union's 100th year.

The Orthodox Union: A Centenary Portrayal is must reading for anyone who considers him or herself knowledgeable in Jewish affairs. Carefully researched and gracefully written, this book is a joy to read for both the Jewish history novice and scholar.

Years of painstaking research and weeding through OU archives have culminated in the publication of the first authorized organizational history, The Orthodox Union: A Centenary Portrayal.

Veteran author Saul Bernstein is known to many as the man who greatly enhanced the prestige of the Orthodox Union as editor of its literary publication, Jewish Life, which began publication in 1946.

Mr. Bernstein himself served as Administrator of the OU from 1949 through several decades of organizational growth. Few can claim his institutional memory, his grasp of the challenges that faced the Orthodox community over the last 50 years or his flair for portraying the story as a cohesive, even entertaining, unfolding of personalities and events.
