OU’s Positive Jewish Parenting Seminar Returns To HANC, November 4

OU’s POSITIVE JEWISH PARENTING SEMINAR TO RETURN TO HANC, NOVEMBER 4; SESSIONS TO EXPLORE GIVING THE MOST TO OUR CHILDREN AND GETTING THE MOST OUT OF BEING A PARENT

In the fourth of a series of highly popular Positive Jewish Parenting seminars, to be held at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County, the Orthodox Union and HANC will present Giving the Most to Our Children and Getting the Most Out of Being a Parent, on Saturday night, November 4, 2006.

Positive Jewish Parenting is a national program of the OU’s Department of Community Services and is sponsored in part by a grant from FEGS Health and Human Services; the Goldstein family; Parkside Memorial Chapels; HANC Samuel and Elizabeth Bass Golding Elementary School; HANC PTA; Young Israel of West Hempstead Sisterhood; and, Congregation Eitz Chayim of Dogwood Park.

The seminar’s workshops will emphasize confronting eating problems and disorders as well as developing responsibility in children.

“In an age, in which the media’s influence on body image can lead to depression and eating disorders, it is important for parents to step in and to help their children develop a positive self image,” declared Frank Buchweitz, National Director of OU’s Department of Community Services. “This program will enable parents to integrate suggestions, ideas and tips from professionals in approaching the very special task of caring for their children in a variety of critical areas,” he said.

Registration will take place at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, at the Samuel and Elizabeth Bass Golding Elementary School, 609 Hempstead Avenue, West Hempstead.

The concurrent workshops, which will be presented at 7:30 p.m. and repeated at 8:30 p.m., are as follows:

•Eating Problems and Disorders: Let’s Prevent Them Before They Start, with Shayna Oppen-Franks, LMSW. Mrs. Oppen-Franks, a graduate of Hunter College School of Social Work, is currently a member of the Women’s Therapy Center Institute post-graduate program for the clinical treatment of eating disorders, and is a consultant to the Relief Eating Disorders Helpline.

•Developing Responsibility in our Kids, with Rabbi Norman Lowenthal, M.S.W., M.S.Ed. Rabbi Lowenthal serves as the General Studies Principal at the Talmudical Academy Elementary School in Baltimore. He is a well-known educator at the elementary and high school levels as well as an individual and family therapist.

The Keynote Address: How to Teach Your Children About Being Safe Without Driving Them Crazy, with Dr. Alex Bailey, Psy.D., will begin at 9:45 p.m. Dr. Bailey is a school and child clinical psychologist, who specializes in working with adolescents and families. He has a private practice in Teaneck, NJ, where he sees children 8 through 18 and is involved with families to help them improve communication and allow for better relationships.

Admission is $15 per person.
