OU WEBCASTS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR THE THREE WEEKS, NINE DAYS AND TISHA B’AV

As Tisha b’Av approaches, Rabbis of Orthodox Union congregations across America are webcasting their insights into the Three Weeks, Nine Days and Tisha b’Av itself in daily Take 5 for Torah and Kinot shiur educational programs.

The Three Weeks (Bein Hametzarim), between the fasts of 17th of Tammuz (July 13) and the 9th of Av (August 3), is the saddest period in the Jewish year, when we mourn many tragedies in Jewish history. The fasts recall the stages of the destruction of Jerusalem and of the first and second sacred Temples.

The Take 5 for Torah offers a five minute message related to the subject of the Three Weeks, whereas the daily Kinot shiur presents a five to ten minute explanation of a different Kinah, the elegies recited as part of the Tisha b’Av service. Both features may be accessed on www.ouradio.org.

During this time, these programs offer meaning to the pain. According to Rabbi Robert Shur, Program Coordinator in the OU’s Pepa and Rabbi Joseph Karasick Department of Synagogue Services, “One of the strongest responses of the Orthodox Jewish community is through tefillah (prayer) and Torah. We hope the increase of both of these will have an effect on the drastic situation in Israel.”
