OU PRESIDENT STEPHEN J. SAVITSKY TO VISIT JEWISH COMMUNITY OF NORFOLK, SHABBAT WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER 6-7
As he resumes his Presidential Tour of Jewish communities across North America, Orthodox Union President Stephen J. Savitsky will visit Norfolk the Shabbat weekend of November 6-7. Earlier this year, Mr. Savitsky visited Omaha, Miami Beach, Seattle, Dallas, Richmond, Great Neck (NY) and Columbus.
In Norfolk, Mr. Savitsky will serve as a Scholar-in-Residence at Congregation B’nai Israel, whose members participated in the OU’s Emerging Communities Job and Home Relocation Fair in June. The purpose of the Fair was to encourage Orthodox families from the New York area to settle in Orthodox communities such as in Norfolk, where the cost of living is much less than in the Tri-State area.
In Norfolk, Mr. Savitsky will also meet with the Jewish community and deliver a series of talks throughout Shabbat.
On Friday night, following Shabbat dinner, which will be hosted in honor of Mr. Savitsky’s visit, he will present on “Issues Facing the Diaspora Jew in the 21st Century.” On Shabbat morning, Mr. Savitsky will speak on “The Orthodox Union: A Lot More than Kashrut,” and at the third meal, he will address the congregation on “Look Up and Change Our World.” On Shabbat morning, the synagogue will hold a special kiddush in recognition of the OU President’s visit.
Rabbi Chaim Silver declared, “We are very excited to host Mr. Savitsky for our Scholar-in-Residence program and to continue to strengthen the bond between the Orthodox Union and B’nai Israel.”
