Help Sderot!
January 17, 2008
We went down to Sderot today to the Ulpana girl's high school. 55 students showed up out of 135. Many had tried to come but because of the onslaught of kassamim this morning they went home. We built a new and special sadna for this morning since we knew the situation had worsened and the girls were in terror. We decided to make sure that every girl who showed up in school would get the workshop.
During the workshop the girls told story upon story of the effect the kassamim have had on them over the past two days. We then did guided imagery which allowed them to express and work on their feelings of fear and anger. We worked on giving them tools to deal with these feelings and then did a final guided imagery of finding a safe place. All of the girls from 7th grade to 12th grade expressed that the workshop helped them. The school was so grateful that we came down during this crisis. While we were there kassamim fell without the red alert siren.
Stories:
An eighth grade girl was taken by ambulance yesterday to the hospital after she was slightly wounded.
An eighth grade girl who was in school today was hurt in her head by shrapnel.
An eighth grade girl had three of the main windows in her house shattered by kassam yesterday. There was a three hour hafsakat hashmal (power out) so they sat in the dark and cold with broken windows.
During the workshop one girl's mother called her every five minutes in panic. Their house had five kassamim land on all sides of it.
On the way to school two seventh grade girls were on the bus. When the siren went off they jumped off the bus and ran for shelter. Then came the boom. Then came another siren and one of the girls could move her legs from fear. Her friend ran for shelter. This girl stayed and a soldier threw himself on top of her to try and protect her.
On the way to school one ninth grade girl was with her little sister outside when the siren went off. Her sister got hysterical and she tried to protect her.
A tenth grade girl described lying on the cold ground when she was outside and the siren went off.
Two eleventh grade girls talked about their two friends who were seriously wounded last year by the kassamim.
One girl said that every time she tried to leave the house for school another siren went off and she would run back home.
One girl described being home alone and being petrified.
One girl described running up and down the stairs fifteen times since they are told to run downstairs every time a siren goes off.
So many of the girls were crying.
They all expressed despair and fear that the situation is worsening.
We were glad that we were there to help.
We will be going on Monday to the elementary school to work with the third and fifth grade which are two classes that are in severe trauma...
