OU Honors Dr. Alan Singer, Exec. Direc. of Shearith Israel, for Outstanding Service

November 20, 2009

OU HONORS DR. ALAN SINGER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF SHEARITH ISRAEL, FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND FOR CHAIRING CONFERENCE SESSION

At the Orthodox Union Executive Directors Conference held earlier this month in Boca Raton, FL, the OU honored Dr. Alan Singer of Congregation Shearith Israel, Manhattan, for Outstanding Service and also for chairing the Best Practices session at the conference.

The OU’s Second Annual Executive Directors Conference brought together synagogue administrators from around North America to discuss the ever-changing environment they face and how their role shapes synagogue policies. It is a project of the OU’s Pepa and Rabbi Joseph Karasick Synagogue Services Department.

Dr. Singer started his career in Jewish communal service as the Youth Director of Baron Hirsch synagogue in Memphis. From there he went on to be the Director of the Jewish Federation-UJA of Raritan Valley in Central New Jersey. Next stop was Director of Administration for the National Conference on Soviet Jewry and since 1995 he has served as the Executive Director of Congregation Shearith Israel, the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue.

Dr. Singer received his BA from Yeshiva University in 1976, his Master’s Degree in social work from the Wurzweiler School at YU in 1978, and his Ph.D. in Social Policy and Administration from Rutgers University in 1995.
