It has been some months since the Eruv Committee was formed. Many
manhours of work were required to complete this Eruv. We are pleased to announce that the
San Antonio Eruv is now "up" and ready for use.
This project has been guided by a wealth of authoritative sources
who encourage the erection or an Eruv around a community to decrease the possibility of
Sabbath desecration and to permit greater freedom of movement in order to enhance the Oneg
Shabbos.
There are many prohibitions which an Eruv does not affect. An Eruv
only permits the carrying of items which may be used on the Sabbath. Items which are
"Muktzah" may still not be carried. Some familiar items in this category are
umbrellas, pocketbooks, wallets, money, coupons, tickets, tokens, cigarettes, matches,
tools, writing implements, etc. Any activity which is inimical to the spirit of the
Sabbath and, therefore, violates its sanctity remains strictly prohibited.
Beyond the 39 Torah categories of activity which are prohibited on
the Sabbath, and Shevus, the rabbinic prohibitions, there is a category of "Uvda
D'Choln, activities which erode the sacred character of the Sabbath. We, therefore, urge
all parents and teachers to impress upon the children the limited nature of an Eruv.
Direct all questions regarding what is permitted and what is prohibited to your rabbi.
A map of the Eruv's present boundaries is available through the shul
office. The Eruv will be checked every Erev Yom Tov and Erev Shabbos. One cannot assure
that the Eruv is up. Every household whose members plan to use the Eruv should call
493-3559 before candle lighting for a recorded message on the status of the Eruv. A Shul
announcement, concerning the status of the Eruv, should be made before people return home
from Maariv.
We wish to express our thanksgiving to the Al-mighty for our success
in this project. We also wish to express our gratitude to Rabbi Nota Greenblatt and Rabbi
Aryeh Scheinberg for their tireless help. This Eruv exists because many Baalei Batim
selflessly contributed their time and money. We thank every one.
For those who have not yet contributed to the Eruv and want to give
their time, please call the above number. For those who want to send funds, please write
to the above address. The requested contributions are: single $18; family $25; sponsor
$50; and Patron $100+.
