Our Synagogue

Formed in 1881, Beth El Jacob Synagogue was begun by a group from the now-dissolved B'nai Israel Congregation.  A permanent congregation was established in 1885 under the leadership of Rabbi A.L. Zarchy.  The first home of the synagogue was at the corner of East Second and Walnut Street.  The congregation was housed in two other locations until finally settling into its current location on Cummins Parkway in 1957.

Beth El Jacob's membership is largely tradition-oriented.  Daily minyanim are held both in the mornings and in the evenings.  The synagogue houses the only mikveh in Central Iowa.

Beth El Jacob Education Programs are open to the entire community and are designed to enhance students' knowledge in Traditional Jewish Studies including: Judaic Study Classes, Bar/Bat Mitzvah Instruction, Preschool/Kindergarten Sunday School, 1st Grade/Kindergarten Sunday School, Adult Hebrew Classes, Adult Talmud Classes and Adult Lecture Series, many classes and many other educational opportunities are given by the Community Kollel of Des Moines. We also have a complete NCSY Youth Program.

Beth El Jacob's Sisterhood is very active, hosting programs for its members and raising funds for the Synagogue through programs such as; rummage sales, Purim Shalach Manot boxes and the baking of hamentaschen, and a complete line of Judaic items in the gift shop in the Synagogue lobby.

Newcomers to the community are invited to attend synagogue services, and our quarterly friday night shabbat dinners, and specifically for a shabbos morning service and to stay afterward to join us for kiddush and meet the Dynamic Rabbi and Rebbetzin, Martin and Rosalie Applebaum, while sharing a bit of wine, cake, and herring with us. You will be glad you came.

Shabbat Morning Kollel Minyan 7:30 A.M.

A schedule of Mincha, Maariv and weekday services and events can be obtained by calling the synagogue office at (515) 274-1551.

If you have any questions regarding the synagogue, please do not hesitate to contact us.  We will respond to you as soon as we are able.
