”The most surreal conversation I’ve ever had.”

Rabbi Steve Burg, Managing Director of the Orthodox Union, recently appeared on FOX News to discuss the government’s policy on birth control.

Rabbi Burg also talked about a call he received from the Roman Catholic Arch Diocese asking for the OU’s support which Rabbi Burg said was “the most surreal conversation I’ve ever had.”

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

Rabbi Burg attended this year’s AIPAC meeting and talks about Israel and Iran’s nuclear threat.

My daughter has polycystic ovarian (Stein-Leventhal) syndrome.  The generally-accepted treatment for this is the BCP (birth-control-pill.)  As a graduate student at Georgetown University, Washington, a Jesuit institution, her health plan was through the university.  Her doctor’s prescription for Yasmin was declined by the university coverage, as “Yasmin” is a birth control/contraceptive medication,  – ALTHOUGH IT WAS NOT PRESCRIBED FOR CONTRACEPTION!  Clearly she is not “the slut” spoken about by a nationally-syndicated talk-show host, who has since apologized.

I fully respect and am aware of Catholic teachings and beliefs, (having myself lived in Dublin, Ireland as student for 4 years.)  They have every right to decline contraceptive prescriptions, however, pharmaceuticals are used “off label.”  I, myself am a medical oncologist/hematologist of 31 years practice, and up to 50% of anticancer drugs are used “off-label.”

There needs to be some reasonableness in their above stance, taking their moral viewpoints into respect, but not using a broad brush to automatically deny patients treatment.

100% Agreed to the information about the details of “off label” prescription purposes. I am also vehemently upset and disgusted with politically self serving Republican politicians and talk show hosts in their choice of politically motivated propaganda tooled attack on the U.S. Executive Branches Administration’s Mandate on this issue. Birth Control medications are also obviously also used to treat medical conditions. If coverage is not provided as part of the Prescription Drug Plan because of religious objection to “Birth Control” medications, it is usually difficult to get coverage even for “off label” purposes. It’s not right on the part of Republicans to exploit screaming about this mandate to protect and advance their political standing in an election year.

Religions, all of them, must keep their noses out of politics.  Or else, let them all pay taxes.

Of course, no one here is talking about where the mother’s life is at risk! Even Rick Santorum has made exceptions regarding abortions when the Mother’s life is at risk. We are talking about mandating contraception coverage with NO copay.

Which is easier to come by, as of late, contraception or a job?As someone who treats Stein-Leventhal syndrome (PCOS) every single day, I can tell you that Dr. “Guest” is wrong. There are other treatments for PCOS, including metformin and lifestyle modification that are safer and have fewer side effects. In addition, I have treated people from Catholic institutions, and they will always pay for the birth control in PCOS, if the physician gets on the phone and explains the medical situation.

I am proud of the OU for their stance on this issue.
