Just A Few Notes About Nuts and Raisins

By Rabbi David Gorelik

1. Roasted shelled nuts have a number of kashruth concerns:

A.  Seasonings applied to both dry and oil roasted shelled nuts require proper Kashruth supervision.

B.  It they are dry roasted then at times gelatin or other kosher sensitive ingredients are sprayed onto the nuts in order to allow the seasoning to adhere. In such situations, these ingredients require proper kosher supervision.

C. If they are oil roasted then the oil requires proper Kosher certification.

D.  Furthermore, dry roasted nuts require proper kosher supervision because a “Keilim” issue may exist.

2.  The major concern with raisins is the possibility of oil used as an additive.  Companies will add oil in order to prevent the clumping of the raisins.
