Rabbi Steven Weil, Orthodox Union Executive Vice President, will serve as Scholar-in-Residence at Beth Avraham Yosef of Toronto synagogue (the BAYT) for a special OU/NCSY Weekend, to be held Friday, June 15-Sunday, June 17 (Shabbat Parshat Shelach). The weekend will focus on “Engaging the Next Generation: Judaism in the 21st Century.” The synagogue is located at 613 Clark Avenue West in Thornhill.
NCSY | Jewish Youth Leadership is the international youth movement of the Orthodox Union.
Friday night, Rabbi Weil will speak in the main shul between mincha and maariv on “What a Strange Song.” He will speak to university students at an Oneg Shabbat (dessert reception) held at a private location, in conjunction with the Hillel/OU Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus (JLIC) program, discussing “This May Be the World’s Hottest Summer.”
Shabbat morning, Rabbi Weil will participate in the NCSY youth minyan. He will speak in the main shul following Mussaf on “Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus – The Orthodox Version.” At 6:00 p.m., Rabbi Weil will give a class for women. Later in the afternoon he will also give a Pirkei Avot (“Ethics of our Fathers”) class, “Paradigms.” Rabbi Weil will also speak at a “Unity Shalosh Seudot” (third meal of the Sabbath) at the BAYT, held with open invitations to other Thornhill Jewish communities.
Rabbi Weil will end the weekend Sunday with a leadership briefing from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the BAYT for BAYT community leaders, and board members of NCSY and its Torah High program.
Rabbi Daniel Korobkin, BAYT Senior Rabbi, formerly served as Director of Community Services for the OU West Coast Region, and as a national OU consultant on synagogue services. He stated, “The BAYT is very proud of its affiliation with the Orthodox Union and seeks to strengthen those ties. As a friend of Rabbi Weil and a former employee of the OU, I am delighted to be able to welcome Rabbi Weil to the BAYT. We trust he will get nachas (pride) to see how active and incredibly immersed in Torah and mitzvot (commandments) our community is, and we look forward to his inspiring and informative talks.”
