December 30, 2008 Seeing the Signs By Kitty Katz Submit a Comment
![]() We are constantly receiving messages from the universe. Often we are too preoccupied with our daily routines to hear or see them. Sometimes we acknowledge their presence but choose to ignore the advice they carry, while at other times we just don't know how to interpret the information. Occasionally, the message we get is so literal, graphic and compelling that we have to pay attention. Consider the simple street sign as a medium of communication. Even a silly sign with misspellings serves an important function: to sharpen our alertness and provoke a smile. Whether warning us to be cautious, slow down or stop (the better to savor life) or inviting us to venture into unknown territory (to grow, to learn), signs are all around us waiting to be taken at face value...or not. View Slideshow KITTY KATZ is a documentary photographer and writer whose work is inspired by the vast panorama of history and cultural diversity in her native New York. Her photographs and articles have been published and exhibited in the U.S. and internationally.
