OU Applauds Mitt Romney’s Clear Statement on Jerusalem

July 30, 2012

ORTHODOX UNION APPLAUDS MITT ROMNEY'S CLEAR STATEMENT ON JERUSALEM

Today, the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America -- the nation's largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization -- applauded presidential candidate for his clear statement with regard to the status of Jerusalem.

In an interview in Jerusalem, CNN's Wolf Blitzer asked Gov. Romney: "Do you consider Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel?" Gov. Romney replied: " Yes, of course. A nation has the capacity to choose its own capital city, and Jerusalem is Israel's capital."

In response to these comments, Orthodox Union executive director for public policy, Nathan Diament, issued the following statement:

"The Orthodox Union applauds Governor Romney for his clear statement recognizing the truth that the holy city of Jerusalem serves as the capital of the modern State of Israel, just as it has served as the capital of Israel and the Jewish people in centuries past.
Gov. Romney's statement comes at a time when too many people in the media and international political circles seek to avoid or obscure the truth of the Jewish people's historic relationship with Jerusalem. These efforts will fail, as lies always do. We deeply appreciate Gov. Romney's statement and his siding with the truth."
