Rape!
In "Messing Around - With Your Mind!" we said:
"The lack of self-control is correlated to problems in society including marital infidelity, rape, sexual harassment and the sexual abuse of children. You can't just turn self-restraint off and on."
You ready for this? Brace yourself. These are some VERY scary facts:
*65% of the girls and 37% of the boys who are sexually active did not want to have that first sexual experience, but were pressured into it.
*18% of girls under 14 and almost 10% of older teen girls lost their virginity to involuntary intercourse. It doesn't matter if it's your boyfriend; that's still rape.
(Source: National Survey on Family Growth)
As if that weren't bad enough, try this fact on for size:
*66% of the boys and 49% of the girls in grades 6-9 said it was acceptable for a man to force sex on a woman if they have been dating for at least six months.
(Source: Rhode Island Rape Crisis Center)
It's bad enough that two-thirds of the boys thought that, but half the girls?
Rape is rape. It's a violent crime. (The Torah goes so far as to compare rape to murder - see Deuteronomy 22:26.) It doesn't matter whether one is raped by a stranger, a family member or a boyfriend, it's a crime and it's wrong. Treating sex casually leads to objectifying people and exploiting them.
