Thomas Lickona, Ph.D.
Dr. Thomas Lickona is a nationally renowned developmental
psychologist and Professor of Education
at the State University of New York at Cortland.
He has also been a visiting professor at
Boston and Harvard Universities. A
past president of the Association for Moral Education, Dr.
Lickona now serves on the advisory
councils of the Character Education Partnership,
Character Counts Coalition, and Medical
Institute for Sexual Health. Dr.
Lickona is a frequent consultant to schools on character
education and a frequent speaker at
conferences for teachers, parents, religious
educators, and other groups concerned about
the moral development of young people. He
has lectured across the United States and in
Canada, Japan, Switzerland,
Ireland, and Latin America on the subject of teaching moral
values in the school and in the home.
Dr. Lickona holds a Ph.D. in
psychology from the State University of
New York at Albany and has done extensive
research on the growth of children's
moral reasoning. His publications
include Moral Development and Behavior
(1976), a popular book for parents, Raising Good
Children (1983), a book describing his 12-point
character education program, Educating for
Character: How Our Schools Can Teach Respect and Responsibility
(1991), and a collection of essays by
various authors, Character Development in
Schools and Beyond (1992). Educating for Character has
been praised as “the definitive work in the field” and was named
winner of a 1992 Christopher Award for
“affirming the highest values of the human
spirit.” His newest book is Character Matters:
How to Help Our Children Develop Good Judgment,
Integrity, and Other Essential Virtues has just
been released.
Dr. Lickona's work has been featured in the
New York Times Magazine
article cover story, Teaching Johnny to be Good (April 30,
1995); in two videos, Character
Education: Restoring Respect and Responsibility
in our Schools and Eleven Principles of Effective Character
Education (National Professional
Resources); and in a four-part video training
series on character education (Quality
Educational Media, Inc.) In October 2001, the
Character Education Partnership presented Dr.
Lickona with the "Sandy"
Award for lifetime achievement in character education.
Dr. Lickona has also
been a guest on numerous radio and TV
talk shows, including The Larry King Live Radio
Show, Good Morning America, and
Focus on the Family.
SARI ABRAMS
A doctoral candidate in clinical psychology at Long Island University in
New York, Sari Abrams is currently
teaching developmental psychology to high school
students. Additionally, she has facilitated
parenting workshops and discussions on topics
such as sibling relationships, communication
within the family and fostering a Jewish
identity in your child.
JERRY FRIEDMAN, Ph.D.
Dr. Friedman founded Shalhevet, an experimental high school predicated on
Torah and a cognitive developmental
approach to moral education eleven years ago.
This philosophy is based upon the work of Dr.
Lawrence Kohlberg, a renowned theorist of
cognitive moral development who became
a mentor of Dr. Friedman at Harvard. Dr. Friedman also founded
and served as President of the
Association for the Advancement of Jewish Education in
Montreal, Vice-President of the Los Angeles Bureau of Jewish
Education, Executive
Committee member of the Council of the National Jewish
Federation of Los Angeles, and a member
of the Boards of JESNA and HIAS.
SAM GOMBERG, Ph.D.
Dr. Sam Gomberg has lectured throughout the United States, Japan, and
Israel on moral developmental theory and
its applications. He is recognized as a leading
proponent of the moral education theory and
research. He has developed educational materials
that have been translated into Hebrew and
have been integrated by Israel’s Ministry of Education
into teacher’s training programs.
SHIRLEY LEBOVICS, LCSW
Mrs. Lebovics is a licensed clinical social worker in private practice in
Beverly Hills where
she offers counseling to adults, families, and children. Her area
of expertise is in the field of domestic
violence, trauma, and anger management and has
written extensively on these topics.
DR. VICKI LEVI-HELFAND
Dr. Vicki Levi-Helfand has been working with children and adolescents for
10 years. She has worked at the Rader
Eating Disorder Institute in Los Angeles and the
pediatric and adolescent unit of the California
Psychiatric Center in Alhambra. She also has
counseled individuals and led groups with
adolescents in private practice. Dr. Helfand received her
master's degree in clinical psychology
from Antioch University in Los Angeles and her
psychology doctoral degree from Ryokan College
in Los Angeles. She currently runs the
enrichment program at Maimomides Academy in Los Angeles.
MICHELLE D. PORJES, Ed.S.
Michelle D. Porjes, Ed.S. is a credentialed school psychologist and
licensed education
psychologist. She is currently the Coordinator of Student Services
at the Pressman Academy of Temple Beth Am
where she specializes in consultation, academic
remediation, and behavioral interventions. Additionally,
she frequently lectures on a variety of
topics including understanding children's
development, developing study habits in children
and adolescents, and enhancing self-esteem in
children.
RABBI STEVEN WEIL
Rabbi Weil is the Senior Rabbi at Beth Jacob, Beverly Hills. He assumed
the pulpit in August
of 2000 and hasn’t taken a vacation since then except for
missions to Israel. He has rejuvenated
the youth department, established a young
couples club and initiated many new social and
educational programs. There are classes for
members of all ages and backgrounds. Rabbi Weil
is active in the community and is always
reaching out to the unaffiliated.
This conference is a continuation of
several highly successful programs held on the
East and West Coasts that have attracted
thousands of participants. Participation in this
program is encouraged by the Los Angeles
Bureau of Jewish Education and sponsored in part
by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles.
