Tefilla Gathering Prayers For Israel To Be Theme Of Sunday Massive Gathering
Tens of thousands of Jews are expected to gather in Lower Manhattan on Sunday, April 21, to recite Tehillim (Psalms) and to pray for the safety and security of Jews in Israel and around the world. The gathering, which the Orthodox Union, together with a broad spectrum of Orthodox Jewish organizations, is urging everyone to attend, was prompted by the need for a massive and public religious response to the ongoing murders of innocent civilians in Israel through suicide bombers and other attacks, and the recent marked increase in anti-Semitic attacks on Jewish citizens and institutions in many countries. The organizations involved in the event’s planning include Agudath Israel of America, Association of Modern Orthodox Day Schools and Yeshiva High Schools, Emunah of America, National Council of Young Israel, Orthodox Union, Rabbinical Alliance of America, Rabbinical Council of America, Religious Zionists of America, Torah Umesorah and Young Israel Council of Rabbis. The program, which will begin at 2:30 pm sharp with Mincha, will be held on Water Street, between Wall and Broad Streets. “We need to make our voices heard in every forum, “ said Harvey Blitz, Orthodox Union president, “including the huge Washington rally which we supported and promoted in every way we could. But most importantly, we need to raise our voices heavenward.” Similar events will be timed to take place in other cities around North America and around the world. Many will be held simultaneously and will join in the New York program through a live telephone hook-up. “This will be one of the largest recitations of Tehillim in unison ever to take place”, said Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, Orthodox Union Executive Vice President. “It is vital that we come together in unity and in huge numbers to ask the Almighty to have mercy on his people.” With tens of thousands expected to attend, the police department will be closing the entire area to vehicular traffic. Participants are advised to take mass transit, except for schools and other groups which must register their buses by calling 212.269.2843.
